A Stormy Riverfest 2012 : With its own "Idol" talent contest, car show, featured performers and more, this year's "Riverfest" in Saint Albans, WV, was terrific. Unfortunately, some of the activities had to be cut short due to the major storm that struck West Virginia on Friday afternoon. All we knew at the time was that we had major wind damage. We later learned that a "Derecho" or straight line wind blew through most of the state and over half a million customers lost their electric service.

Jackson General Hospital-Winter Gala 2012 : On Saturday, January 28, Jackson General Hospital held its annual Winter Gala, with a "Roaring Twenties" theme. Between the hotsy-totsy flappers and the keen flivvers, there was a lot of beauty in this swanky hall! Cruise through these photos, and you may see a jitney, a torpedo or maybe some hoofers, but you won't see any hooch! No wet blankets were allowed, so everyone was puttin' on the Ritz! Riverfest Pageant in St. Albans, WV-2011 : The Riverfest Pageant was held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Gateway Christian Church in St. Albans, West Virginia. Over twenty young ladies entered, hoping to be crowned as the Mrs. Queen, the Teen Queen, or the new 2011 Riverfest Queen! Our judges were Amanda Linville, Patrick McMurtry, Bill Heaberlin and Theresa Erwin. With the leadership of our Masters of Ceremonies, Jim Strawn and Brittany Alberts, let's take a look back at that evening...the smiles, the gowns, the spotlight and more!

Boy Scout Dinner at Parchment Valley Conference Center 2011 : The Allohak Council and the Little Kanawha District of the Boy Scouts of America held their 23rd Annual Distinguished Community Service Award Dinner recently at Parchment Valley Conference Center. Over 250 Boy Scouts and supporters attended the event, at which Mitch Carmichael served as the master of ceremonies. Highlights included a publicity video produced by a pair of Eagle Scouts, a silent auction, recognition of Scouts who attained the Eagle rank during the past year, and music by Tyler Davis, of the group Crashing Jericho. The evening concluded with Rob Fisher's introduction of Cheryl Donohoe, the 2011 recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award. Cheryl is an outstanding member of our community, and reflects a high standard of values worthy of being associated with the Boy Scouts of America.

Legislative Conference 2011, WV AFL-CIO : "Keep It Made In America" was the slogan of the 2011 Legislative Conference, hosted by the West Virginia AFL-CIO. Attendees from the organization's many affiliated unions met at the Marriott Hotel in Capitol City of Charleston, WV, during the first week of February. Guest speakers included Rick Thompson, Speaker of the House of Delgates; Scott Paul, Executive Director, Alliance for American Manufacturing; Paul Lemmon, Assistant to the President of the AFL-CIO; and our own Bob Brown, AFT; Larry Matheney, Secretary-Treasurer; and Kenny Perdue, President of the WV AFL-CIO. After a Media Event at the West Virginia Culture Center, attendees departed to the Capitol Building to meet with their Legislators and discuss issues important to the working men and women of West Virginia. Charleston Boulevard Rod Run & Doo Wop 2010 : CARS! Cars with chrome, cars in white, turquoise, magenta, sky blue and flat black; cars with halogen headlights, neon lights, brake lights and glowing eyes. A rumble to the ears, a flash to the eyes, and maybe a hint of nitrous oxide in the air. These sights and sounds are evidence of the fifth annual Charleston Boulevard Rod Run and Doo Wop. This year, 905 custom and classic cars took up temporary residence along the Kanawha Boulevard, while thousands of residents and visitors strolled among them. Take a few minutes here, and "stroll" through these photographs from one end of the Boulevard to the other. Bridge Day in West Virginia 2010 : Bridge Day on October 16, 2010. This was my first Bridge Day, and I was fortunate to be one of the authorized photographers to document the largest single-day festival in the state of West Virginia! Whitewater rafting, rappelers, base jumpers, food, a beautiful setting in the New River Gorge and lots of people to enjoy all of this! With 363 jumpers and over 1000 jumps, there was a lot to see. JGH Winter Gala 2011 : "Mardi Gras!" was this year's theme for the Winter Gala, hosted by the Jackson General Hospital Foundation. With delicious catering by Silver Spoons, and terrific music by the Santa Cruz band, guests enjoyed a hot Cajun night on a cold January evening. In addition, a silent auction was held, including artwork, quilts, a carrot cake and more. If you were there, I'm certain you enjoyed yourself, and I hope you will enjoy these photos. Dunbar High School 1965 Reunion : "On the banks of Old Kanawha, There's a School we love; Dunbar High our Alma Mater, Guided from Above. Through the Years, We'll Love and Honor- True we'll ever be; Dunbar High Our Alma Mater, Victory to Thee!" Classmates from the 1965 Class at Dunbar High School gathered for their 45th Reunion on Friday, Sept. 17, and Saturday, Sept. 18. Everyone met at the Dunbar Women's Club on Friday for an "ice-breaker," and again on Saturday at the Nitro Moose Club, where they enjoyed dinner, music, dancing and conversation. I hope as you look at the photos in this Gallery, it refreshes the memories from this weekend. All of the photos can be purchased by ordering directly through this website. Slam Dunk 600 Benefit Basketball : The "Slam Dunk 600" Basketball game was held on Friday, March 12, 2010, with the goal to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity's 600th home in West Virginia. With the help from several sponsors, along with the WV Blazers, First Lady Gayle Manchin, Miss West Virginia Talia Markham and Mayor Carolyn Rader, Executive Director Donna DeHart of the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity garnered significant funding. The wall raising for the 600th House is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, on the first day of Spring! If you would like to help, or have any questions, please contact Donna DeHart at 304-372-1748. Habitat for Humanity: Raising the Walls! : The Jackson County Habitat for Humanity is building their 600th West Virginia home in Evans, WV. On Saturday, March 20, the walls were raised, with a little help from Ripley Mayor Carolyn Rader, Magistrate Tom Reynolds, Governor Joe Manchin, Mrs. West Virginia and lots of volunteers with hammers and nails! CASA Motorcycle Marble Run, October 2, 2010 : In cooperation with the Octoberfest Parade in Ravenswood and Parchment Valley Conference Center in Ripley, CASA is hosting their Motorcycle Marble Run Fundraiser on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Motorcycle riders begin their day in Ravenswood, with the option of riding as one of the lead units in the Octoberfest Parade. They will then visit the Riverside Park as their first stop on the Marble Run, and continue across the Ohio River to further stops in Ohio and West Virginia. Their next to last stop will be at the Parchment Valley Conference Center, where refreshments and photo opportunities will be available. Then, riders will head back to Ravenswood for their last stop, and have the chance to further enjoy the activities of Octoberfest! CASA is Court Appointed Special Advocates for children. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. They stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence—the one adult who cares only for them. Wood County Fire Prevention & Safety Fair 2011 : With over 40 agencies participating in this year's Safety Fair, over 700 children and their parents enjoyed the exhibits at the campus of West Virginia University at Parkersburg. Fire Departments, the WV State Police, helicopter ambulance, canine search & rescue, and many more. Attendees also enjoyed a fire prevention puppet show, and a comparison burn demonstration on home sprinkler systems. WV AFL-CIO "Workers Memorial Day 2013" : On April 28 of each year, a Memorial is held to remember the men and women who went to work and didn't come home. In West Virginia, there were 22 workers who died last year, from reasons related to their jobs. The West Virginia AFL-CIO gathered union members, families and friends together at Willow Island, WV, to remember these individuals. Willow Island was selected because of the tragedy that occured 35 years ago this year, during which 51 construction workers were killed when their scaffolding collapsed during the buidling of the cooling tower at the power plant. The names of all these 73 workers were read, so that they will not be forgotten.
