Civil War Lantern Tour - Grafton, WV : On Memorial Day weekend, for the past seven years, reenactors have honored the memories of fallen Union Civil War soldiers. Over 1200 Civil War dead are buried here, with 664 unknown, marked only by a number. Lit by oil or candle lanterns, the reenactors lead their guests among the headstones of the Cemetary, pausing to remember specific soldiers and stories, including the first Union fatality of the Civil War, Private Thronsberry Bailey Brown. Accompanied by living memories of soldiers in uniform and ladies in hoop skirts and bonnets, some music and songs, we were reminded of the time when brother fought brother, with both defending the country they loved. At the conclusion of the evening, a lone bugler sounded "Taps" from the upper terrace of the Cemetary, reminding the guests and honored dead... "Day is done, gone the sun, from the lakes, from the hills, from the sky, all is well, safely, rest, God is near."

Bluefield and Bramwell, WV, Trip with PPWV : For our Summer outing, Members of the Professional Photographers of West Virginia met in Bluefield, West Virginia. After a reception Saturday evening, we struck out across town on Sunday morning. The historic residential mansions along with a visit to the Bluefield City Park and the downtown area were part of the itinerary for the morning. After lunch, we traveled by trolley-bus to the community of Bramwell, one of the origins of the development of the southern West Virginia coalfields. While there, we learned the stories of the founding members of the town, visited the beautiful old homes and businesses, enjoyed a treat at the soda fountain, and caught a ride on our trolley back to Bluefield, including a quick stop at Pinnacle Rock State Park! Many thanks to the Mercer County CVB, along with Marie Blackwell and Betty Goins, for adding so much history to the scenes we viewed. The PPWV will once again be publishing a book that will include the best of our images from the day.

Shepherdstown, West Virginia Photowalk : On July 11, 2010, I had the pleasure of visiting Shepherdstown, West Virginia, along with members of the Professional Photographers of West Virginia. As our Summer Event, we walked the historic streets of Shepherdstown. The buildings, streets, trees and people in period dress take you back over a hundred years to the time of the Civil War, when our state was born. I hope you enjoy the photos. I also did a short side trip to Antietam Battlefield, and have included images from there. The PPWV have published a book with our photographs, titled "Shepherdstown-Through the Lens." New River Gorge Trip : Along with a few friends from our local photo club, I recently traveled to the New River Gorge area. We got an early start, and I started with a photo of the early morning sky. We stopped at a few places along the way, including the Whipple Store and the New River Arch Bridge, and then went down into the Gorge, visiting Glen Jean and Thurmond. Mountains, valleys, rivers, along with trains, old buildings and bridges. I hope you enjoy the photos, and if you see something you especially like, leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

Indian Gathering at Fort Randolph : In early June, an Indian Gathering and trading days were held at Fort Randolph, near present-day Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The trading post was open, as was the kitchen and the blacksmith shop. Several of the local Indians came in to trade their skins and crafts, and there were many swaps and stories.
