World Trade Center Artifact Convoy
On Thursday, May 12, 2016, a convoy left JFK Airport in New York, bound for Huntington, West Virginia. Their cargo included steel rails recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center after the attacks of 9-11-01, as well as other artifacts. The convoy was accompanied by mounted Officers of the Huntington Police Department, the West Virginia State Police, representatives of the Patriot Guard, and other first responders. Many joined the convoy as it traveled over 600 miles from beginning to end. Patriot Guard riders would join as an escort, then break away as others would join further along the route. The trip climaxed with an arrival and presentation ceremony at Pullman Square in Huntington, West Virginia. An honor guard from the West Virginia State Police removed a flag that had covered the WTC steel, and then presented it to Huntington Mayor, Steve Williams. The steel rails and artifacts will be preserved in a 9-11 Memorial to be created in Huntington. Tom Bowen, a Huntington area first responder who volunteered in the response to 9-11 in New York, was instrumental in securing these artifacts and arranging their transportation.
