Civil War Lantern Tour - Grafton, WV
On Memorial Day weekend, for the past seven years, reenactors have honored the memories of fallen Union Civil War soldiers. Over 1200 Civil War dead are buried here, with 664 unknown, marked only by a number. Lit by oil or candle lanterns, the reenactors lead their guests among the headstones of the Cemetary, pausing to remember specific soldiers and stories, including the first Union fatality of the Civil War, Private Thronsberry Bailey Brown.
Accompanied by living memories of soldiers in uniform and ladies in hoop skirts and bonnets, some music and songs, we were reminded of the time when brother fought brother, with both defending the country they loved. At the conclusion of the evening, a lone bugler sounded "Taps" from the upper terrace of the Cemetary, reminding the guests and honored dead... "Day is done, gone the sun, from the lakes, from the hills, from the sky, all is well, safely, rest, God is near."
