1. Mountaineer Photo Excursions: Workshops & Classes

General Butler SRP & Big Bone Lick Park, KY

We’ll be exploring a series of contrasts during our Indoor – Outdoor Winter Photo Workshop in Northern Kentucky. The General Butler State Resort Park will be our base of operations, as well as one of our photography venues. We’ll be photographing the Park Lodge, which is an architectural attraction in its own right. It was opened in 1962, renovated in 1996, and is a crown jewel of the community. The rich woodwork complements the reverence you feel when you walk into the upper lobby, and look out across the woodlands of the Park.

The Park also incorporates the Stone Overlook and Observation Point, one of the highest points in Carroll County, and provides the perfect place to gain a panoramic view of the community, as well as the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers. The Butler-Turpin State Historic House is a memorial to one of Kentucky’s foremost military families from Colonial times through the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War. The House has a commanding view of the Ohio River Valley, and is located on the grounds of the Park. The historic structure has many of its original features, which includes the woodwork, the fireplace mantels, the staircase, and flooring in the upstairs section of the house. The memorabilia collection consists of original military documents along with family pieces, including both furniture and objects.

Big Bone Lick Historical Site is located nearby, and is well known for its fossilized remains of prehistoric animals, and its herd of American Buffalo, or Bison. The Bison is the largest of all North American land mammals. Great herds once roamed this area, and provided food, clothing and shelter for the Indians and pioneers. The last wild bison were seen in Kentucky around 1800. The site’s herd is an effort to reestablish these animals at Big Bone Lick. Additional wildlife includes various birds of prey, and winter is a great time, when the park is quiet and undergrowth at a minimum, to best view any of the 57 bird species still found wintering at the park. Ron Gaskins and Amanda Haddox, our Workshop Instructors, will be leading us indoors and outdoors, at General Butler SP and at Big Bone Lick, learning and photographing scenic views, architecture, history, and wildlife! They may even toss in an opportunity to cross the border and see a waterfall!
