Western Maryland - Deep Creek Lake, Oakland

“Go West, young man!” We didn't quite go where that comment suggested, but we did go as far west as possible…in Maryland! During the winter, we visited beautiful Garrett County! We learned cold weather skills, as well as capturing breathtaking views of Deep Creek Lake, Swallow Falls, and historic downtown Oakland, Maryland…all part of the “Deep Creek Experience!”

Our Deep Creek Lake Winter Photo Workshop in February 2015 was a unique and challenging weekend, with time spent outdoors in the snow and cold of a western Maryland Winter. The experience and images our Workshoppers brought home were worth all the effort!

We made arrangements for special access at the Deep Creek Lake State Park, and began our Workshop weekend at their Discovery Center. Have you seen an icy crystal waterfall? Can you travel back in time to an historic train station? We did! We walked out on a frozen lake and photographed ice fishermen…this was a chance to go out in the snow and experience all the opportunities that winter photography has to offer… in the safety of a group with two experienced photographers leading the way. We saw nature in an entirely different aspect from how it appears during the rest of the year…frozen…suspended. Winter isn’t a dead time…it is a beautiful, white paradise!
